In today's publishing industry, there are many ways for a writer to get their writing published so that others can see. One way not to do it is by use of a vanity press. A vanity press is a publication or book publisher that charges the writer to publish their work or to see the work when it is published. One such example of a vanity press is a contest that charges the entrants to see the copy of the anthology that their winning entry is published in and this book costs the writer fifty dollars.
Money should always go to the writer and not from them. You should never have to pay any publication or book publisher to have your work published. Your work should be good enough to appear in a publication without having to pay someone. When looking at book publishers, be concerned when they try to send your work to a book doctor. More often than not, these are scams trying to get money out of the writer. Another thing to watch out for when starting out involves agents. Be very weary when an agent tries to charge up front fees. Yes, there are some costs involved in trying to get your manuscripts sold, but this costs should come out after they are sold and not up front. As a new writer, look at everything closely. Be careful and ask questions. Visit websites that post warning about editors, agents, and publications to watch out for. One such site is: Preditors & Editors. When looking at agent make sure they are a member of the Association of Authors Representatives'. Agents that belong to this organization do not charge fees.
