Are you a writer?You have been writing for years. Writing in your journal, writing poetry, or writing short stories. You might even be like me and have a novel you wrote when you were a teenager stashed in your closet somewhere, but you are not a writer. Now I know right this second you are staring at the screen in shock. You’ve been writing for years. You must be a writer. Well today, I am here to tell you differently. If you hide your writing away or only do it in your journal, you may write and enjoy it, but you are not a writer. You do not become a full-fledged writer until you start doing something with your material. You can start by submitting your material to writing contests. There are many of them listed on the internet. Some may charge you fees to enter, but a lot may not. Look online at http://www.inkspot.com or http://www.writerswrite.com. In there classifieds lists, there are many writing contests. The first contest is usually the hardest, but it will get easier, and who knows you might win. You can also submit your work to paying markets. There are so many out there. You have magazines, newspapers, and newsletters. With the addition of the Internet, you have ezines and websites that need writers for their content. You might want to start by calling your local newspaper they might need someone to help write for them. If you want to start bigger and go for the magazine market, I suggest you pick up a copy of the latest Writer’s Market available from Writer’s Digest books, please visit there website http://www.writersdigest.com for more information. Ok, you say all this is great, but I am not ready for magazines and newspapers. I want to start smaller. Well then you can. There are many non-profit organizations that are looking for writers to write there newsletters and bulletins. You might even work for someone or know someone that works for such an organization. Call them and see if they need help. You would helping out someone and getting your writing out there at the same time. If you don’t know anyone, then visit your local library and do some research. It is a start. The only thing that matters is that you get your writing out there. Become a writer. Share your writing with the world. I know it is scary at first, but you never know what can happen until you try but whatever you do make sure you keep writing!
