A City River

Sumner
local stretch. The local high school uses it with their canoes. In the summer you often see the local kids out in canoes, rubber dingy's, and what ever, playing around. We have a big old wooden canoe that frequently gets dragged across the road and put in. I think its on its last summer, time for a new one, rot has set in I'm afraid. If its gets really hot you even catch some of the local kids swimming, well jumping in off the bridge, if you call that swimming. Up the river in town there are gondolas, and peddle boats for hire. Down the river from us at the most deepest and widest is where they do rowing practice and races. Occasionally you might even catch a Dragon boat practicing.

Though I said that autumn is my favorite time, because of the trees, I can't forget to mention the river in the winter. It is really special then. As I walk my son to school on a cold frosty morning, the river has this wonderful eerie feeling. It is so still and clear and all you see is this mist rising off it, with an odd duck appearing in the mist. It's hard to explain, but just makes you feel privileged to be alive.

So on that note I think I will take the dog for a walk and see if the ducks need feeding, maybe even if I find the time sit on one of the seats and watch the river go by.
