Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, 1900-2002She visited Canada in 1939 with His Majesty the King, becoming the first reigning monarchs to visit the Dominion. In September Britain went to war against Germany; a week later Canada also declared war on Hitler's Germany. The Queen Mother and her daughters refused sanctuary in Canada, remaining in the bombed Buckingham Palace during the war. Queen Elizabeth served as Queen until 1952 when her husband died, and her daughter Elizabeth was crowned as Queen Elizabeth II. Now, as the Queen Mother, Elizabeth tooks a background role, refusing interviews and keeping the mystique of the monarchy of yore rather then the publicly open monarchy of Elizabeth II and her family. In 1989, the Queen made her eleventh and final trip to Canada. She held fond memories of the country, which she said stole her heart. In 2000, she celebrated her 100th birthday. For the celebration Canada honoured her with an honorary Companionship of the Order of Canada. She will be mourned and missed. God Save the Queen. Sources:
