Julie Payette was born in Montreal, PQm in 1963. She studied electrical engineering at McGill and computer engineering at the University of Toronto. She first worked in computer systems and natural language processing. She was chosen by the CSA in 1992 and after training worked as a technical advisor for the Mobile Servicing System, which is the Canadian contribution to the International Space Station. In 1999, Payette flew on space shuttle Discovery. She is now, for the past year, the chief astronaut for the Canadian Space Agency.
