The Alberta Elections are over. Ralph Klein has won a third straight majority government; the Tories have won their 9th straight majority. The Tories have been in power in Alberta since 1971 and this will continue for a while it seems, as the Tories are stronger than ever.
The Tories have won 74 of 83 seats available. The Liberals will form the official opposition with 7 seats and the NDs have the 2 seats remaining. As the popular vote goes, it is a true majority for the Conservatives as 61% of voters cast their ballot for a Progressive Conservative. 27% went to the Liberal party and eight per cent to the New Democrats. The Tories that have dominated Alberta for 30 years continue. They swept the Rural areas as they captured all 32 riddings outside of larger communities (all Alberta save Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, Medicine Hat, St Albert, Grande Prairie and Peace River) but that isn't to say they didn't dominate the cities, capturing all the Calgarian ridings and more than half the ridings in Edmonton and taking all the seats in most of the communities sited. Ralph Klein himself won his seat of Calgary-Elbow by taking 66% of the vote. The Liberals came a distant second. It seems that Edmonton was the place for opposition as the Liberals won 6 of their 7 seats in the capital city. The remaining seat was won in the riding of Lethbridge-East. Liberal Leader Nancy MacBeth was not elected. She lost her Edmonton-McClung seat by 1056 votes. She later said "The People have spoken..." and she accepted the results. On the New Democrats side, they showed poor numbers as they have since 1993 before which they formed then official opposition. But in 1993 they were shut out but managed to keep the same number of seats they had in the 1997 election. Both seats were from Edmonton where leader Raj Pannu won his seat in Edmonton-Strathcona. Anyway, that is the results of this election. Check back in four years. Go To Page: 1
