Stockwell Day wins Alliance LeadershipCanada has a new Leader of the Opposition. For months now, the Canadian Alliance has made headlines. It ended with the leadership race that had Stockwell Day and Preston Manning fighting for the leadership. That race has ended and Preston Manning was on the losing side. Stockwell Day is leader of the Oppostion and of the Canadian Alliance. Stockwell Day had 58 086 votes for around 63% of the vote. Preston Manning had 33 474 votes for 47%. A total of 91 560 members voted. For the first time, Preston Manning is no longer leader of the party. He was leader of the Reform Party since it was created in the 80's. He reinvented the party as the Canadian Alliance and was leader until the race. The race began between four people: Stockwell Day, Preston Manning, Tom Long and Keith Martin. The first part of the race saw Stockwell Day win, with Preston behind. After that, Tom Long helped support Preston Manning although many Long supporters turned to Day. Heres a look at the New leader of the Alliance. Stockwell Day was born in Barrie, Ontario and grew up in Montreal. He lived in many regions of Canada including North West Territories, BC, and the Maritimes. He studied at the University of Victoria. In 1986 Day represented Red Deer to the Alberta Legislature as a Progressive Conservative for the first time. He's held the spot ever since. He's had many different roles with the party such as Chief Whip, Government House Leader, Minister of Labour, Minister of Social Services. As of 1997, he is the Provincial Treasurer of Alberta. Stockwell said he wanted to work with Preston Manning and Tom Long after he won the leadership race. Day says he is prepared to take on the Liberal party and lead his party to victory in the next federal election which should be rather soon (Within the next year) and portrays Chretiens values as failed European-socialists and that most Canadians do not agree with them. Day says the Alliance will cut taxes and make the government smaller because it worked in Alberta and Ontario (ha, that's a laugh, oh, sorry I'm supposed to be impartial) Anyway, I've decided to add a poll to see who would vote for in the coming election. The poll will be up until the next election, whenever it may come. See you all next week. This article was short but hey. I'm not very interested in the Alliance you know, so yeah.
