Prince Edward Island Elections


The Prince Edward Island government has called an election for April 17th, 2000. Here are the details.

The Conservative Party, which is now the party in power, is led by Pat Binns. Pat Binns was originally from Saskatchewan as he was born in Loydminster October 8th, 1948, but now resides in Hopefield, Prince Edward Island. He studied at the University of Alberta and became a Bean Farmer in PEI. He was first elected to the Prince Edward Island legislature in 1978 and was a cabinet minister until 1983. He was elected to Parliament in 1984 and was defeated in 1988. He became the Tory Leader in 1996 and was elected Premier the same year.

The Tories plan for the island's communities are to give more financial help to communities through the Community Development Fund which is administered by the Community Development Bureau, a Tory creation in 1999. They also plan to make 911 a province wide emergency number. To ensure safety, three more police officers will be funded and there will be three more for each of the next three years. The Tories will use fuel tax money to repair highways and will also rebuild bridges. The Tories will continue to renovate schools and ensure they are made better. They will increase administrative grants to school boards. They will add funding to hire more Teacher Assistants, for the Senior High School Transitional program, for the French First Language schooling, among others.

The Liberals' are led by Wayne Carew, a Hunter River, PEI native, born May 4th, 1955. He studied at the University of Prince Edward Island and became a Hospital Administrator and Director of Confederation Centre of the Arts. He became a Municipal Councillor for Summerside, and became the Liberal leader in March of 1999, becoming leader of the official Opposition

The New Democratic Party of PEI is led by Herb Dickieson. He was born in New Glasgow, March 8, 1954 got a science and education degrees at the University of Prince Edward Island and a Medical Degree at Delhousie University. He Taught briefly in High School and later became Chief of Medical Staff at the O'Leary Community Hospital. He became Leader of the NDP in 1995 and was elected to legislature in 1996.
