Canada wins Gold Cup!

Some people say we're losing our hockey, personally I don't agree, but if it's the case we can always turn to soccer. Well, as you've probably heard, Canada has just won the Gold Cup. Some say it was just lucky, I say they played well and deserved the Cup, but it did start with luck. They had to win a coin toss to get into the playoffs.

In the division Canada was in, there was also Costa Rica and South Korea, They all tied, Canada 2-Costa Rica 2, Canada 0-South Korea 0, South Korea 2-Costa Rica 2. Since Costa Rica had 4 goals, they went ahead but Canada's and South Korea's records were the same so who goes on. A Coin toss will solve that. That's the luck part, the skills come later.

So with that win of a toss, Canada advances. Their first rival is, defending champion Mexico (who had beaten Canada 8-0, last time they met in the Gold Cup). Ramon Ramirez scored for Mexico and Carlo Corazzin scored for Canada to tie it up during regulation time. So it goes to overtime, when Canadian player Richard Hastings scored three minutes in the extra period (?? Whatever Overtime is). Its funny how I actually name the players, I have no idea who they really are, but on the other hand I can name all Stanley Cup winning teams, so that's where I stand, eh? It just seamed that the whole soccer tournament would end with a US-Mexico final. But both teams were beaten by the, to-be finalists when Columbia eliminated the US. In Mexico, fans mourned in Canada, it was rejoicing. I couldn't believe it, instead of talking about how the Habs (I'm a habs fan) or the Leafs (I live in Toronto) were doing we talked about SOCCER! But not as much as we would latter on.

So Canada advances. They meet Trinidad and Tobago in the Semi-finals. The game was scoreless until the 68th minute when Mark Watson scored the lone goal of the game. The win for Canada means that it has won the CONCACAF title. The reason it has already been awarded even if it was only the semi-finals was because Colombia, the other finalist, was not a CONCACAF member, it was only invited to the tournament. So Canada faces Columbia. Canadian players thought that Trinidad played better than them so I guess we owe the win to Goalie Craig Forrest.
