January
On New Year's, 9 people die in an Avalanche in Northern Quebec. Toronto gets 40 cm of snow. Latter after 15 more centimetres, Lastman calls the army. Toronto is laughed at by Edmonton, Quebec, Winnipeg...all of Canada. Oh well, we missed school!. Alberta drilling executive Norbert Reinhart was released after being kept hostage for 94 days in Colombia. The United Alternative concept is conceived. It would unite the Progressive Conservatives and Reform in some sort of way. In other news, Eric Berntson stood trial on charges of fraud and breach of trust in Tory scandal in Saskatchewan. Toronto Dominion Bank employee was shot to death. She was the first death in Canada during a bank robbery in 18 years. The BC Supreme Court judge, Duncan Shaw, rules that Child Pornography laws are unconstitutional. That was one controversial ruling; that's for sure. The roof of Montreal's Olympic Stadium caves in. After school authorities striped search a group of students, the students and parents launched a lawsuit. In the event that both sides than do not resolve peace talks in Kosovo, Canada is ready to send soldiers in a NATO-led military strike against Yugoslavia.
February
To start the month of February, Wiarton Willie made the headlines as he was announced dead before the Groundhog Day celebrations. All provinces except, surprise, Quebec, signed a social union deal. Liberal premier Brian Tobin is re-elected in Newfoundland election. When King Hussein of Jordan died, Jean Chretien didn't make it to the funeral, which caused a lot of criticism. The Toronto Maple Leafs loses its last game at the historic Maple Leaf Gardens to the Chicago Blackhawks. Conventions for the Unite-the-right begin. CBC workers begin strike by picketing at the Air Canada Centre. At the very moment, Toronto opened up the venue with a 3-2 win over the Habs.
March
The Landmine pact, in which Canada played a significant role, becomes a law. Premier Lucien Bouchard has decided to compensate the "Duplessis Orphans". BC premier Glen Clark is pressured to step down because of the casino licence scandal. The future territory of Nunavut chose its first premier, Paul Okalik. Senator Eric Berntson was sentenced to jail for fraud (I mentioned him earlier in this article). The nurses in Newfoundland go on strike. Canadians starts its fire on Yugoslavia. Strikes are all around in Canada as Federal prison guards walk out. Thousands of Canadian Serbs rally against the Air Strikes against Yugoslavia but Canada ends up sending more planes. The compensation funds offered by the Canadian Red Cross to Hepititis C victims is not good enough. 50 years! Newfoundland celebrates its 50th anniversary in the company of PM Jean Chretien and Quebec Premier Lucien Bouchard.
