Decade in Review: 1990-1999


1990
In January, The Right Honourable Ramon John Hnatyshyn becomes Governor General. The privious Governor General was Jeane Sauvé. The Meech Lake Accord fails in June, when all the provinces fail to sign it. In June, the Edmonton Oilers dynasty comes to an end when they win their fifth Stanley cup, last as of Date. It was their first without Gretzky. In October, Ontario elects its First New Democrat Government and Bob Rae becomes Premier. Negotiations begin between Canada the United States and Mexico on a Free Trade agreement. Gary Filmon, Tory leader, is re-elected as Premier of Manitoba. Roger Bacon becomes Premier of Nova Scotia.

1991
Ah, the year all Canadians Dreed. In January of 1991, the Goods and Services Tax (GST is introduced by the federal Government. The Quebec Superior Court rules the ban on cigarette ads unconstitutional. Rita Johnston replaces Bill Vander Zalm as Premier of British Colombia. Michael Harcourt, leader of the New Democratic Party, becomes Premier of Alberta. New Democrat Roy Romanow is elected Premier of Saskatchewan. New Brunswick votes for Frank McKenna as their Premier. Donald Cameron, Liberal, becomes Premier of Nova Scotia.

1992
1992 is the year of biginnings and firsts. In May, the Canadian Government approuves the plan to create Nunavut, an Inuit Territory to achieve Territorial Status in 1999. Roberta Bondar becomes the first Canadian woman in space, and the Toronto Blue Jays become the first Canadian Team to win the World Series. In August, the Charlottetown Agreement would call Quebec a "Distinct Society" is concieved but in an October Nation-wide referendum, Canada opposes the changes to their Constitution that the Charlottetown Agreement would bring. In August, agreement on the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is reached. Tory Ralph P. Klein becomes Premier of Alberta.

1993
In February, Conservative Prime Minster Brian Mulroney steps down. Kim Cambell replaces him as Prime Minister. She's the first female to be PM. In October, the Liberals win the elections. Jean Chretien becomes Prime Minister. The Tories only win two seats. The Montreal Canadiens win the Stanley Cup. It is the last Canadian Club to win the Cup of the Century. They become the winningest team in North America ahead of the New York Yankees (NOTE: the Yankees stole the title in 1999, after winning their 25th World Series). World Series: the Toronto Blue Jays win the World Series again. Ah, are we stealing the game away from the States? Well no but it's nice to imagine. Tory Ralph P. Klein elected Premier of Alberta.
