Millennium PartyWell the new millennium is about to start! Yahoo! Or is it... well no mater what the 2001 believers say, for me it starts in 2000. And technically I'm right... and so are you (but lets keep the emphasis on the first part of the sentence please, I'm from Toronto). If you look at it on a Christian level (because that's the system we all use) the second millennium will start in 2001 because of the absence of the year 0. But in the scientific denotation of years there is a year 0 (1BC) and negative numbers before that (-1 for 2 BC and so on). Since a millennium is 1000 years, it will have been already 2 millenniums since positive-number years. And since I'm not Christian, I'll have to take the latter as my base of year numbers. Okay I guess I wasn't so comprehensive and anyway no one really cares because everything will happen on December 31st 1999-January 1st 2000. All this to say, that the new millennium will be celebrated across the world and it will also be celebrated across the nation. So since I have nothing better to do, I will talk about all the partying. First let me start where I know things: Toronto my hometown. Record night: From the top of the Canadian National Tower there will be the world's highest fireworks. The final blast of the millennium countdown will erupt from the top of the CN tower. Anyway there will be a Millennium Lights Concert at the Waterfront on Yonge Street. The event begins at 9pm and is an awareness event for War Child. It will be the largest laser and light show in the history of Canada. Oh, and then there's the traditional First Night at Harbourfront, where all events are alcohol free (do I sound as if I'm advertising this?). Anyway that's the big stuff I've found on www.city.toronto.on.ca and www.toronto.com but there's got to be more. Hotels and such are going to make a fortune on this as hotels such as the Royal York are charging more for a two night room during the millennium and are holding their own parties. If you look hard enough, I'm sure you'll find a place to go to from North York to Toronto (well obviously, but you know) and Etobicoke to Scarborough... Hum... I'd expected more stuff worth saying for Toronto, it being the biggest city and all but I can't seem to get my hands on any on the net. Oh well.
