Even in Canada, Canadian movies don't get much publicity. Here is a bunch of Canadian Movies I've seen. They were pretty good too. I'm not the best critic but just to see my film preference: Intelligent and not Typical-American-Big$Movies (i.e. Either perfect happy ending when hero run's through the fields towards his true love or one guy, with a tiny handgun can outfight about 20 guys with really good machine guns)
The Red Violin/Le Violon Rouge (Canada-Italy) [1998] This was written by Don McKellar and François Girard and directed by François Girard. It started out as a Canadian Production but ended up a Canada-Italy co-production to help get funds. It's the story of a violin, built by violinmaker Nicolo Bussotti. His wife is pregnant and both her and the baby die during the birth. With, grief, Nicolo finishes the violin. Then the violin is given to a monastery. An orphan, Kaspar gets the violin. It then goes through the hands of gypsies to musician Frederick Pope, in Oxford. Then to a Chinese girl to Montreal Auction (this is the main setting and is seen a lot during the film) where an expert played by Samuel L. Jackson is trying to find out if the violin is the "red violin" by Bussotti. It was actually a good movie, the music was good too. Got pretty good international success as well and was nominated Last Night, 1998 Here's another one with Don McKellar, a very good one about the end of the world. Unlike many American movies, the question is not, how stop this and save the world but what to do in the six hours left. So we look at a bunch of individuals. Patrick (Don McKellar) wants to end the world alone, Sandra (Sandra Oh) is trying to get back to her husband to commit suicide before the end. Craig plans to act out a bunch of sexual fantasies. But of course things don't go to plan when Sandra needs a Car to get home. Patrick then tries to get her there by borrowing a car from Craig but that too isn't enough. One of the best movies I've seen, personally. Les Boys 2, 1998 Now, What goes well with Canada? Hockey... And what could be better than a movie with Rémy Girard about an Amateur Hockey team going to France for a tournament. Losing to a team from Africa is only the beginning of the Canadian team named Les Boys' trouble. Their equipment gets stolen, they're in a bad hotel (which brings Ti Guy to almost kill himself because he chose it). And oh, big surprise they end up winning games and they get their equipment back on time for the finales against...big surprise: the Russians (with Tretiak's cousin or some relative playing). Definitely worth seeing, even if you don't know French. Go To Page: 1 2
