Manitoba Elections

Elections are on September 21 in Manitoba. The Conservative Party will try to keep its majority government while the Opposition will try to form the next government.

The Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba presently forms the Government. The Leader of the Tories is Premier Gary Filmon. Gary Filmon was born August 24, 1942 in Winnipeg. He was elected to the Winnipeg City Council in 19175 and was first elected to Manitoba Legislature in 1979. Was elected Tory leader in 1983 and lost an election in 1986 before forming a minority government in 1988. He was re-elected in 1990 and 1995.

The Tories main goal is preparing for the future. The three main parts of the plan are the creation of jobs, providing skills to the young so they can fill these jobs and Making Manitoba a good place to live in. The Tories have a five point economic strategy. This strategy includes the creation of a good business environment. The Tories claim that "government cannot create competitive industries; only the private sector can do that" and plan to reduce the burden on the private sector from the government. The Tories also want to promote trade and claim exports to the United States have tripled since 1990 after the Tories took office. Attracting investment, investing in people and the development of industry specific strategies are also part of this economic strategy. Education is important and the Tories have a "7-point plan". The Tories plan to find new ways of funding post-secondary institutions. They plan to encourage newly graduated students to stay in the province of Manitoba. The Tories want to work with other provinces to get Ottawa to restore transfer payments so that they can freeze tuition fees. Parents should have access to information to help their children and children should be able to learn in a safe environment. This too is part of the Tory plan. Also the Tories plan to create a new ministry for post-secondary education, Training and Innovation. To receive Welfare, people will be required to look for a job, if they can't find a job they will be put on the "work for welfare". Those on "work for welfare" must do community services and risk losing their benefits if they refuse. The Tory plan is to secure the health care budget and will continue with a plan that saw health care funding rise 60% since 1988. The Plan also contains ways of relieving hospital overcrowding, reduce waiting lists and to recruit more doctors and nurses. The Last part of the Tory platform consists of making streets a safer place to be in.
