Saskatchewan Elections


The Saskatchewan Elections were called for September 16, 1999. The Three Main Parties in Saskatchewan are the New Democratic Party, the Liberal Party and the Saskatchewan Party.

The NDP and Premier Roy Romanow formed the government before the elections. Romanow was born August 12, 1939 in Saskatoon. He studied at the University of Saskatchewan where he got law and art degrees. Prior to becoming a Politician he was a Labour Lawyer. He was first Elected to Legislature in 1967 until he was defeated in 1982. He came back in 1985, a year before being elected Party Leader. He became Premier in 1991 for the riding of Saskatoon Riverside.

The NDP promises to create 30,000 new Jobs. In 1992, 450,500 people were working and this July there are 499,300 (increase of 48,800 jobs). With the budget surplus they will lower taxes to reduce the cost of doing business in Saskatchewan, invest in the Quality of Public services and Lower the Public Debt. The NDP plans to lower Income tax to all Saskatchewan residents (about $1000 to average family) and to eliminate it for lower income families and seniors. For Education, the NDP promise to pay the first year of University (or college) tuition of any graduating High School student by providing a certificate that will be valid for use in the next five years after graduation. They also plan to reduce post secondary tuition fees and to increase the quality. They will also renovate 400 school for a better environment, increase class room resources and help educators do a better job. NDP plan to hire 500 more health care providers, to have publicly funded ambulances and improve home care for the disabled and for seniors. The NDP plans to build rural Saskatchewan. By making sure Ottawa knows that Saskatchewan farmers need to be at the same level as the states and the Europeans to be able to compete. They aslo plan to create opportunity in rural Saskatchewan.

Elwin Hermanson, of the Saskatchewan Party (considered a Tory party by other politicians), was a farmer born on August 22, 1952 in rural Saskatchewan. He is seeking to unseat NDP incumbent in Rosetown-Biggar. He was a Reform MP from 1993-97 and was elected Saskatchewan Party Leader in 1998.

The Saskatchewan Party will cut basic Provincial Income Tax by 20% over four years and reduce the PST to 5%. The Sask. Party plans to increase highway construction and maintenance budget by $50 million dollars a year and $10 million a year on rural roads. The Saskatchewan Party plans to change welfare into their WorkFirst program which will change welfare recipients from government dependency to self-sufficiency with their obligation to work. The Party will eliminate the Small Business tax over the four years. Create Jobs with a combination of income, sales and small business tax cuts. The Party will, amongst other things, demand the Federal government restore half of the money it has cut from health care since 1995 to restore confidence in the Saskatchewan Health Care System. The Saskatchewan Party will post a K-12 curriculum that will ensure that students graduate with what they need in post secondary education. They will provide computer and Internet-based teaching for rural school divisions so that students benefit from technology. The Saskatchewan Party will ensure security and quality of life for seniors, make communities safer than they are, will create a partnership with municipal governments and create a more affordable and effective government.
