A Look at the Provinces, Part I: British Columbia


The most important source of British Columbia's economy is Forests. The Coastal forest grows fast with the mild wet weather and produces the largest trees in Canada. Most of Canada's forestry is based in British Columbia and with British Columbia's help, Canada has one of the world's biggest paper industries. There are many Mammals in the West including Grizzlies, Black Bears, Caribou, elks, bighorn sheep and Mountain Goats. British Columbia has the Second largest fishing industry after the breakdown of Newfoundland's fishing industry, only produced more in Nova Scotia. Agriculture is not very important as it lacks of the Prairies good agricultural land. Vancouver is Canada's third largest City (after Toronto and Montreal) and is one of the leading Commercial cities in Canada.

The Population is four-fifths English Speaking. Two per cent of the population speaks french and people of Asian descent (mostly from China and India) make up a fast growing minority.

Thirty-two members in the Canadian Parliament and six in the senate represent British Columbia. The Queen in BC is represented by a Lieutenant governor (Chosen by the General Governor) who signs all laws passed by the British Colombian Legislature. The Premier is the one who holds executive power in the province. The Premier of BC at this moment is Glen Clark of the New Democratic Party, who was elected in 1996.
