ONTARIO
On June 3rd, the people of Ontario went to the polls and voted. Most voted for Mike Harris and resulted in a majority government for the Progressive Conservatives. The Progressive Conservatives hold 59 seats, seven more than the 52 required for a majority government. The Official Opposition remains the Liberal Party, which gained more seats, this election than the previous one when there was more obtainable seats. They hold 36 seats, five more than in 1995. The New Democrats lost official status holding less than the twelve required (they hold nine). Just because Mike Harris and the Progressive Conservative Party hold the majority of the seats and has the most votes he doesn't have the majority of votes. More people are against Harris than are for him. The Progressive Conservatives has 45.1% of the popular vote; Liberals have39.8%; the NDP has 12.6%. If you add the two other main parties who are against The PC, they have 52.4% of the popular vote. The remaining 2.5%of the popular vote belong to Other parties: Green Party, Libertarian Party, Family Coalition, Natural Law, Reform, Communist, Ontario Provincial Confederation of Regions and in dependant candidates.
In Northern Ontario, the seats have little effect on the final results. Northern Ontario is either NDP or Liberal and has only two PC riddings: Nipissing (of course, its Harris' riding) and Perry Sound-Muskoka. It is apparent that Harris' policies have been harsh against the people of Northern Ontario (And Toronto but I'm getting to that). Of the ten ridings (in what is commonly called northern Ontario), Half of them are Liberal and the three more are NDP (including the two majorly big ones). Lets also note that in half of the ridings that didn't elect PC, the PC was third. The ones that did vote PC as the second Party are Timiskaming-Cochrane, Thunder Bay-Atikokan, Nickel Belt and Sudbury. I have seperated Southern Ontario into three parts: Southern Ontario-West (Winsor and serounding area), Southern Ontario-Centre (905 area and surroundings) and Southern Ontario-East (Part Between Quebec and the United States). I'll start with the West. It is evident that most of southern Ontario must be PC since they had only two ridings in Northern Ontario. In The West, the ridings are about even, the Tories having two more than the Liberals. The PC is more popular in the ridings near the central part of Southern Ontario. The Liberals Hold the ridings in Winsor andaround Lake Erie.
