Canada at War: Part 1, the seven-year war and War of 1812French Boats got lost in the fog on their way to Louisbourg (a French Fortress on Cape Breton) and were attacked by the British. The War was official declared in 1756. In 1756 and 1757, the French were leading in the war as they captured important forts such as Fort Oswego and Fort William Henry. In 1758, the British started to win, they captured Louisbourg, stopping the French (from France) from getting to Quebec and gained control of Lake Ontario.
