1995 - Liechtenstein became a member of the European Economic Area (EEA). May 2 1945 - As World War II wound down, the remnants of 1st Russian National Army, which had fought for Germany against Communist Russia, marched across the border at Schellenberg from Feldkirch, Austria and sought asylum. (see "Liechtenstein in World War II" at http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/liec... ) May 7 1852 - Fifty Liechtensteiners arrived at New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, most of them on their way to Dubuque, Iowa. 1989 - Joseph Emanuel Prince von und zu Liechtenstein was born. May 12 1974 - Wenzeslaus Prince von und zu Liechtenstein was born. 1985 - Maria Annunciata Princess von und zu Liechtenstein was born. May 15 1957 - Margaretha Princess von und zu Liechtenstein née Princess of Luxemburg was born. May 16 1969 - Maximilian Prince von und zu Liechtenstein was born. May 19 1972 - Alexander Prince von und zu Liechtenstein was born. May 20 1956 - The blue and gold arms with a bell over a triple mountain were granted to the commune of Triesenberg. The colors refer to the Walser immigrants who immigrated from Switzerland and settled in Triesenberg. The triple mountain represents the mountain where the village is located. The bell is the symbol of St. Theodul, patron saint of the Walsers, and protector of the Masescha chapel. May 22nd 1999 - Georg Prince of Liechtenstein, son of hereditary prince Alois and his wife Sophie, was baptized. His godfather was his uncle, Prince Constantin. May 24 1995 - Joseph Wenzel Prince von und zu Liechtenstein was born. May 24th 1999 - Prince Hans Adam II of Liechtenstein opened the eight European Olympic Games of Small States, which are held in Liechtenstein from 24 to 29 May. Also present were Prince Albert of Monaco, and the hereditary couple of Luxembourg, Henri and Maria Teresa. May 31 2001 - Liechtenstein announced that it was bringing a case in the World Court against powerful Germany for violation of national sovereignty by eavesdropping on businesses in Liechtenstein through one of its monitoring centers in Germany's southern Black Forest. A 30-page German intelligence report alleged that international organized crime was protected by a small group of senior Liechtenstein government officials, judges, politicians, bank directors and financial advisers.
