April 5 2001 - Otmar Hasler of the FBPL (Progressive Citizens' Party) became the head of the government. The other four members of the government elected by the 25 deputies of Liechtenstein's Parliament were also members of the FBPL. April 6 1955 - the International Court of Justice rendered negative judgement in the Nottebohm case brought by the Principality of Liechtenstein against the Republic of Guatemala. Liechtenstein had asked for restitution and compensation because the Government of Guatemala had acted illegally against a Mr. Friedrich Nottebohm, a citizen of Liechtenstein, contrary to international law. April 7 1851 - the first large group of emigrants from Liechtenstein landed at New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. 1848 - Johann Michael Menzinger was appointed a Land Administrator (Landesverweser) in the Principality of Liechtenstein April 10 1973 - Tatjana von Lattorff née Princess von und zu Liechtenstein was born. April 14 1938 - Local Nazis attempted a coup but were defeated when the loyal citizens armed with sticks rose up and stopped them. A Nazi SS invasion force stopped at the Liechtenstein/Austrian border when the coup failed. Liechtenstein remained neutral all through World War II. 1940 - Marie Princess von und zu Liechtenstein née Countess Kinsky von Wchinitz und Tettau (wife of Hans Adam II, Prince of Liechtenstein) was born. April 18 2002 - The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) announced that it was placing Liechtenstein on its official list of "uncooperative tax havens". April 20 1836 - Aloys II became prince of Liechtenstein. 1999 - Georg Antonius Prince von und zu Liechtenstein was born. April 25 1968 - Switzerland and Liechtenstein signed an agreement over the acknowledgment and enforcement of judicial decisions and arbitral awards in civil cases. April 26 1922 - Alfons Feger named acting Head of Government. 1978 - Hans Brunhart of the VU party became the head of the government. April 27 1815 - At the Viennese Congress of 1815, after Napoleon's defeat, Liechtenstein became part of the German Confederation. The Congress of Vienna suppressed most Germanic principalities but upheld Liechtenstein's sovereignty. Today Liechtenstein is the only surviving part of the Napoleonic territorial system. It is also from this date that the independence of the principality is claimed. Go To Page: 1
