1920 - Liechtenstein assumes responsibility for the operation of its postal administration. Previously to this Austria handled the Principality's entire postal affairs. March 5 1943 - Prince Franz Josef II was married to Countess Georgina von Wilczek in Vaduz. March 8 1989 - Liechtenstein concluded a Convention on social security with Switzerland. March 12 1718 - Anton Florian (b. 1656 - d. 1721) became Count of Vaduz and lord of Schellenberg (title Graf von Vaduz und Herr zu Schellenberg) until 23 Jan 1719. March 15 1972 - Constantin Prince von und zu Liechtenstein was born. 16 March 1699 - The residents of the County of Schellenberg took an oath and paid homage to the Prince of Liechtenstein in Bendern. March 17 1839 - Joseph Gabriel Rheinberger, Liechtenstein's best-known composer was born in Vaduz. Rheinberger studied music in Feldkirch and Munich. In 1867 he became a professor of music at the Munich Conservatory. His students included Engelbert Humperdinck and Wilhelm Furtwängler. Rheinberger composed 20 organ sonatas, four operas and church and chamber music. March 18 1958 - Andreas Wenzel Liechtenstein, skier and winner an Olympic silver medal in 1980, was born. March 19 St Joseph's Day (fixed Public Holiday) March 20 1982 - Nikolaus Prince von und zu Liechtenstein and Margaretha Princess of Luxemburg were married on this day. March 22/23 1799 - The French under Massena crossed the Rhine at Bendern and marched towards Feldkirch. Marshal Oudinot crossed the river further south at Trubbach and conquered the Fortress of Luziensteig, in the south of Liechtenstein, which was defended by the Austrians. The French Imperial army attacked on the 22nd and 23rd of March, 1799. Four thousand French and Austrians soldiers died on the battlefield near Feldkirch in the north part of this small country and at Tisis, Voralberg. Three weeks later, the French retreated back to Switzerland. March 28 2002 - the Principality of Liechtenstein submitted the grounds for its application against the Federal Republic of Germany to the International Court of Justice in The Hague with regards to its dispute with Germany in its treatment of Liechtenstein property confiscated in the former Czechoslovakia as German external assets that it used in order to settle its war debts. March 29 1923 - the Principality of Liechtenstein concluded a customs union treaty with Switzerland to replace the customs and currency union it had with the Austro-Hungarian empire before its Go To Page: 1 2
