February 1 1912 - The new stamps for Liechtenstein were first issued. Today, Liechtenstein's stamps are world famous and collector's items February 2 Candlemas (fixed Public Holiday) February 3 1958 - Angela Princess von und zu Liechtenstein née Brown was born. February 9 1801 - The frontiers of the Principality of Liechtenstein were precisely defined when, under the treaty of Luneville, the Swiss Republic was recognized and the boundaries decided on. 2001 - In the elections for the Landtag (Diet) held on the 9th and 11th of February, 86.7% of the citizens of the Principality voted. The Progressive Citizens' Party received 49.9% of the votes and 13 out of 25 seats. The Patriotic Union received 41.1% of the votes and 11 seats. The Free List received 8.8% of the votes and one seat. February 10 1772 - Prince, warrior, friend of the arts, and benefactor of the poor, Prince Wenzel died. He constructed the church at Triensenburg at his own expense, and is remembered as one of the country's greatest princes. Prince Franz Josef I then became the ruling Prince of Liechtenstein. February 11 2001 - Elections for the Landtag were held. (See February 9) February 12 1499 - During the Swabian War the Swiss armies crossed the Luziensteig and defeated the Swabian army near Triesen. They occupied Vaduz Castle the following day and burn it down and took Baron Ludwig of Brandis prisoner. 1627 - Karl, Fuerst von und zu Liechtenstein, (1569-1627) died. He was a Knight of the Golden Fleece and possessed a domain covering 5,800 square kilometers, 24 towns, 35 bourgs (market- towns), 756 villages and 46 castles including the Principality of Liechtenstein. February 14 1945 - Hans Adam II Prince von und zu Liechtenstein was born. February 18 1686 - Jakob Hannibal III Friedrich (b. 1653 - d. 1730) became Count of Vaduz and lord of Schellenberg (title Graf von Vaduz und Herr zu Schellenberg) until 22 Feb 1712. From 18 Jan 1699 he was Count of Vaduz only. February 22 1712 - When Count Jacob Hannibal of Hohenems could not pay his debts, the County of Vaduz was finally sold on Feb.22, 1712 to the Liechtenstein family, for 290,000 guilders. The sale received Imperial satisfaction. February 23 1864 - Peter Kaiser, Liechtenstein's greatest historian, died in Chur, Switzerland. Go To Page: 1
