January in Liechtenstein

January 1 New Year's Day fixed Public holiday 1809 - The Prince’s chief administrator in Liechtenstein, Schuppler, tried to modernize the principality against the will of the people who did not want change. He built roads, redistributed land into larger plots and forbid the division into smaller plots as well as other reforms, all at the expense of the Prince’s subjects. Schuppler also abolished the “Landammaner”, and made the two counties and parishes subject to the Prince’s administration. An agent with limited powers replaced the judges and advisors in each parish. Many protested and threatened to join the parish of Voralberg, Austria if the “Landammaner” were not reinstated. 1827- Austria, which by treaty administered Liechtenstein postal system, reopened the Balzers Post office. 1912 – The new postal agreement between Austria and Liechtenstein came into effect. Austria continued to provide postal service in Liechtenstein and to issue special stamps, which were to be sold in Liechtenstein post offices along with Austrian ones. 1918 – The provision for universal male suffrage from the age of 24 added to the 1862 Consitutuion came into effect. January 2 St Berchtold's Day fixed public holiday January 6 Epiphany (fixed Public Holiday) January 12 1893 – The Liechtenstein Family Treaty was confirmed by Austria. January 13 1870 - The Diet approved the railway concession to Austria to extend its railway through the country to Buchs or Sargans. January 18 1699 - The bill of sale for the Lordship of Schellenberg to Imperial Prince Johann Adam Andreas of Liechtenstein was signed in Hohenems. Johann Adam I Andreas Fürst von (b. 1662 - d. 1712) then became Count of Vaduz and lord of Schellenberg (title Graf von Vaduz und Herr zu Schellenberg)until 16 Jun 1712 January 23 1719 - Emperor Charles VI united Schellenberg and Vaduz as a principality under the immediate authority of the Empire, with name of Liechtenstein. January 23, 1719 is thus the date of the founding of the Principality. January 24 1857 - Liechtenstein entered into a currency agreement with Austria. January 29 2000 - Maximilian Prince von und zu Liechtenstein and Angela Brown were wed. Go To Page: 1
