As a new feature, I will be putting up each month an almanac of important dates in the history of the Principality for that month. This monthly almanac is in addition to my regular articles and is part of Project Liechtenstein. I have tried to be accurate as possible and I am still researching information to add. SEPTEMBER

September 5

1718 - The people of Liechtenstein took the oath of allegiance before the Prince's emissary, Harprecht, in Vaduz. The arms and colors of the new ruler replaced the old in Vaduz castle.

September 7

1975 - Rudolf Prince von und zu Liechtenstein was born.

September 11

1971 - Wedding of Philipp Prince von und zu Liechtenstein and Isabelle de l'Arbre de Malander.

1997 - Russia returned the archives of Liechtenstein's royal family in exchange for a dossier on the execution of Russia's last czar. The Red Army had seized the Liechtenstein family archives in Austria at the end of World War II when it captured the Liechtenstein castle near Vienna. Prince Hans Adam had bought the Sokolov archive at a London auction in 1990. Sokolov was a White Army officer who investigated the July 1918 execution of Russia's last czar, Nicholas II, and his family in the city of Yekaterinburg.

1862 - Johann II with the approval of the Diet proclaimed a new constitution in Eisgrub Castle

August 1

1842 - The Liechtenstein Family Treaty was signed between the reigning prince and his brothers and other male relatives whereby the crown was hereditary through the male line on the basis of primogeniture.

August 7

1896 - Liechtenstein joined the Austria-Hungary and Switzerland agreement on upon measures to be taken at their borders in case of a cholera epidemic.

August 8

1898 - Certain articles of the Austrian penal law were modified for application in Liechtenstein.

August 10

1867 - The Principality joined the Austrian monetary system.

1945 - A Russian contingent demanded Liechtenstein hand over the fugitive members of the 1st Russian National Army. Liechtenstein refused but agreed it would allow any to leave who wanted to. The Russians then tried to persuade the men to return to Russia. Many agreed, and returned to Russia and were never heard from again. The rest remained in Liechtenstein for a year, when many then immigrated to Argentina.

August 19

1946 - Philipp Prince von und zu Liechtenstein was born.
