Going Down To Liechtenstein Prt 2

In my last article I told how I plan to get to Liechtenstein but only made it as far as Zurich Airport in Switzerland. Now I have to figure how to get to Liechtenstein, a distance of 112 kilometers. There are three ways – by car, by bus and by train.

I could rent a car but my budget does not allow it. However the roads through Switzerland run through some nice easy landscape and might be worth viewing. Do not forget that you have to pay a road toll, called `vignette` to drive on Switzerland’s Superhighways. I would also need to get an International Driver’s License (IDP). The IDP is recommended along with a valid Canadian driver's license for Canadians planning to drive in Europe. In Canada, IDP’s are only attainable from the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) at a local CAA office. An application can also be downloaded the CAA Web site (CAA). Your IDP is valid for one year from the date of issue.

For me, the best way to get to Liechtenstein from Zurich is to take the train. Liechtenstein has no local railways but an international line runs from Zürich to Vienna and stops at Schaan just north of Vaduz. I can take a train right from the airport into downtown Zurich and from there to my destination. If I do not want to get off at Schaan, I can detrain at the Swiss border towns of Buchs and Sargans or Feldkirch, Austria. Local buses from all these points run regularly into Liechtenstein. By taking the train, I can enjoy a leisurely trip while viewing the countryside in comfort. I like the idea of leaving the hassle of driving a car through uncharted territory (for me) and getting lost. When I was younger it was fun but not it is nuisance.

Well, Now I am in Liechtenstein and ready to explore the fabulous little country. But there is one last necessary thing to take care of. I must make sure that I am have all the necessary shots – ugh! You know – those nasty needles. I hated them when I was a kid and I still hate them now. But they are necessary if I want to have an illness free trip. To get the latest on communicable diseases in other countries I can contact the World Health Organization and Health Canada. Health Canada's Travel Medicine Web site at http://www.TravelHealth.gc.ca has information and recommendations on travel in Europe and Mad Cow Disease. You can also fax them through their FAXlink service at 613-941-3900, under access #195. I consulted my physician well in advance of travelling to determine if I had any health risks and what vaccinations were necessary. I also made sure that my routine (childhood) immunizations such as tetanus, diphtheria, polio, measles were up-to-date. Liechtenstein has few problems in that area and its health services are excellent.
