Missing Liechtenstein

Climb up to the Prince’s castle that sits majestically on the hill overlooking Vaduz, the capital village of Liechtenstein. Though it is closed to the public, you can get sense of its history by standing outside its massive walls and gazing across the Rhine Valley where invaders marched, armies fought and ordinary people struggled heroically to survive.

Dawn at Malbun

Malbun high up in a mountain valley is Liechtenstein's premier ski resort favored by families and novices as well as more experienced skiers. You can get to this remote valley by car or bus. But a visit to the valley any time of the year rewards those who are willing to explore beyond the obvious. The scenery is spectacular. Check out the cam view at http://livecam.lkw.li/

Triesenberg sits on a mountain terrace above Vaduz. Along with its magnificent views over the Rhine Valley, it boasts a strikingly beautiful lovely onion-domed church. In the 13th century, the Walser people, fleeing persecution, famine and hard times in Switzerland immigrated here and added their unique culture to Liechtenstein.

Triesenberg

Over seven thousand years of Liechtenstein history can be experienced when you explore the ruins of a large Roman villa at Nendeln, the remnants of the walls of a Roman fort at Schaan, the early Christian burial mounds at Balzers, the foundations of various early churches at Eschen and Bendern. The Middle Ages lingers in the castles of Liechtenstein - Schuss Vasuz, Gutenberg in Balzars and the ruins at Schellenberg ( See my article on the castles of Liechtenstein at http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/1531... and http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/1531...

There is much, much more! But time and space do not allow me to do full justice to the depth and quality of Liechtenstein. And as I mentioned before, mere words and pictures are a poor substitute for the real thing – visiting Liechtenstein!

Now if you will excuse me, I have to get busy – dreaming of and planning my visit to Liechtenstein.
