Liechtenstein in World War I

Not only did Liechtenstein have to negotiate diplomatic relations with Switzerland and Austria but it also had to educate the world community about its true situation and present its viewpoint to the victorious allies.

The situation was complicated by an internal crisis of November 7, 1918. Prince Johann II, after a reign of over sixty years, was suddenly faced with the opposition of the majority of his subjects. Because of the hardships of WWI and Liechtenstein isolation, his people wanted more say in running their country. A new constitution a few years later helped to calm things down but it was many years before the internal unrest subsided.
