In August 2002, Liechtenstein's unemployment rate rose to 1.4 percent, the highest since October 1999.

August 1

1842 - The Royal Liechtenstein Family Treaty was signed between the reigning prince and his brothers and other male relatives whereby the crown was hereditary through the male line on the basis of primogeniture.

August 2

1885 - The volunteer fire brigade of Schellenberg was form.

1919 - The 1852 Customs Treaty with Austria abrogated by unanimous vote of the Liechtenstein Diet.

2002 - The princely house and the Constitutional Commission agreed to publish the revised draft to the 1921 constitution.

August 4

1928 - Franz Josef Hoop appointed Head of Government.

August 7

1896 - Liechtenstein joined the Austria-Hungary and Switzerland agreement on upon measures to be taken at their borders in case of a cholera epidemic.

August 8

1898 - Certain articles of the Austrian penal law were modified for application in Liechtenstein.

August 10

1867 - The Principality joined the Austrian monetary system.

August 11

1994 - Liechtenstein said it would neither grant asylum, nor expel 18 Tibetan refugees, but permit them to remain in the tiny principality pending investigations.

1999 - A total Solar Eclipse was visible in Liechtenstein

August 15

August 16

1906 - Prince Franz-Josef II was born.

1945 - A Russian contingent demanded Liechtenstein hand over the fugitive members of the 1st Russian National Army. Liechtenstein refused but agreed it would allow any to leave that wanted to. The Russians then tried to persuade the men to return to Russia. Many agreed, and returned to Russia and were never heard from again. The rest remained in Liechtenstein for a year, when many then immigrated to Argentina.

1956 - The coat of arms for the commune of Ruggell was granted on the 16th August. The blue and red represent the national colors of the Principality of Liechtenstein while the golden ear of corn symbolizes the successful struggle of the peasants with the Rhine River which often flooded the village until conquered by dikes and dams.

The coat of arms for Balzars was granted on this date. Balzers' arms are derived from those of the Barons of Frauenberg, who were Lords of Gutenberg Castle around 1300. The minnesinger Heinrich von Frauenberg is particularly well known.

August 19

1946 - Philipp Prince von und zu Liechtenstein was born.

August 26

1984 - Prince Franz Josef II, appointed Prince Hans-Adam II Deputy of the principality of Liechtenstein and entrusted him with the Business of Government. Prince Adam assumed executive powers.
