Tips for parents: Curious George Visits the Library

- Set limits: Only stay for a set amount of time and only allow your kids to check out a set number of books. - Be excited: Share the excitement when your child finds a book they like. - Read: Take a moment to "preview" one of the books you are going to take home by finding a comfortable spot to read with your child. - Be Organized: Once you set home, keep your library books in a special place separate from your personal libray. - Set an example: You can model good library behavior, and your kids will pick up on this. This includes getting books for yourself! - Share the experience: Don't leave your child unattended in the library.

Don't forget to read about libraries. All of their favorite book characters have visited the library, including Amelia Bedelia in Amelia Bedelia Bookworm by Herman Parish, Curious George in Curious George Visits the Library by H.A. Rey, and others. Check your child's favorite series.

Picture books that feature libraries:

Wild about Books by Judy Sierra

This is a particular favorite of mine as it follows librarian Molly McGrew as she goes to the zoo and gets all the animals wild about books. The humorous, rhyming text and the bright, colorful illustrations by Don Brown (of Arthur fame) are a tribute to Dr. Suess. This is a great book for library, book, and animal lovers of all ages, but especially little ones.

Carlo and the Really Nice Librarian by Jessica Spanyol

Carlo, a giraffe, is afraid of the librarian at first, but he eventually finds out how nice she is when she reads to him, has him help shelve books, and signs him up for a library card. The bright illustrations that include labels for many items make this a great book to introduce your little one to the library.
