World Statesmen
This site contains lists of heads of state and heads of government going back prior to 1900 of all currently existing countries and territories. The site also provides good general encylopedia-type information: "World Statesmen is an encyclopedia of nations, colonies, international and religious organizations, and other polities. Country facts, maps, anthems, flags, links, and multiple indexes will help you explore the fascinating world of global politics and history" (from the site homepage).

Artists

AskART.com
From the site: "On the "Profile Page" for each of our 27,000 artists, we give as much general information as we have been able to find in the last 19 years: Dates, states, methods, biographies, subjects for which best known, a decade by decade breakdown of 20th century literature in which they are referenced, and total number of auction lots sold and unsold of their works."

The Impressionists
Get profiles of the Masters -- Degas, Monet, Morisot, Pissarro, Renoir, and others -- and explore the Classroom section which discusses colour, theme, and brushwork of various paintings. Find links to online impressionist collections, museums, and other quality sites, and take a quiz to test your knowledge of the impressionists.

artnet Research Library
Biographies of more than 16,000 painters, sculptors, photographers and other artists (much of the content is from the "Grove Dictionary of Art"), as well as information on materials, techniques, styles and art movements.

webMusuem
The Artist Index is a great resource for short but informative biographies on a variety of artists. Also helpful is the art glossary and famous artworks collection.
