Pregnancy: Recommended Resources

I've just had a baby girl (that's the reason for no article in October, sorry about that) and thought an article on pregnancy and childbirth related resources would be worthwhile to librarians and other Suite readers. I hope these resources are helpful to you librarians out there and that your patrons also find these resources useful.

Before getting into resources on the Web, here are a few books that I found useful during my pregnancy. They can all be found at your local library or bookstore:

What to Expect When You're Expecting, ISBN: 0761121323. This is the "bible" of pregnancy books, answering virtually every question you could ever think of. A great resource. Here's an excerpt from the Publisher's Weekly review (review excerpts are taken from the Barnes and Noble website):

"This revised third edition of the popular pregnancy guide offers the authoritative yet reassuring advice that parents have come to rely on from all the titles in the What to Expect series. The book is arranged by month, from pregnancy test through labor and delivery. Each section offers answers to frequently asked questions, along with features such as "What You May Be Feeling" and "What You May Be Concerned About." Every imaginable issue is addressed, including the small but nagging subjects that women may not want to discuss with their doctors, such as how their bodies will look at seven months, or why some pregnant women "glow" while others have acne."

What to Expect the First Year, ISBN: 0894805770, is another great resource by the same authors. Here's part of the Publisher's Weekly review:

"Parents-to-be are likely to find themselves quickly immersed in this highly authoritative manual by the collaborators of What to Expect When You're Expecting. Nearly 700 pages of snappily written, friendly advice, constructed in the form of chatty answers to hypothetical questions, are arranged on a month-by-month basis. For each of 12 months, there are a guide to the progress the baby may be expected to be making at this stage, a list of potential health or other problems and paragraphs on the myriad questions all new parents ask--on subjects as various as in-home care, birthmarks, circumcision and breath-holding."

The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy: Or Everything Your Doctor Won't Tell You , ISBN: 0671524313. This book and its companion The Girlfriends' Guide to Surviving the First Year of Motherhood: Wise and Witty Advice on Everything from Coping with Postpartum Mood Swings to Salvaging Your Sex Life to Fitting into That Favorite Pair of Jeans, ISBN: 0399523308, are fun and irreverent yet very realistic and informative.
