My 'every-so-often' article on newsworthy developments in library-land or new or newly-discovered resources... I hope you find these tidbits helpful and/or interesting!
Google News I learned about Google News from Gary Price's Virtual Acquisition Shelf and News Desk. Thanks, Gary, for your ever-valuable resource. Google News is located on the Google homepage, it's one of the tabs along with Images, Groups, and Directory. Some Google News highlights: * contains over 4000 English language sources * database refreshes every 15 minutes * ability to sort by relevance or date Bookcrossing.com I'm pretty sure I've written about or mentioned Bookcrossing.com before on my site, but here's another article that caught my eye recently: These readers are eager to pass the book. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Bookcrossing.com: "Here's the idea: Take a book you've read, register it at the BookCrossing site, slap a special identifying label inside the cover, and leave the book in a public place." I love it. Lii.org Special Features Have you checked out the special features at Librarians' Index to the Internet lately? They're located on the right side of the home page. Right now there's Yucca Mountain, The Grapes of Web, and September 11th & Beyond. Another new and very special feature at the LII is Free Range Librarian: "a monthly think piece from the Librarians' Index to the Internet. Each month we will feature one article or review on issues important to librarianship." I'm looking forward to seeing each month's installment. Congratulations to the LII on these great new features and collections. Interview: Eric Miller on the Semantic Web I was sad to read that NewBreed Librarian is no more. But they left us with some good stuff: "Eric Miller is the World Wide Web Consortium's Activity Lead on the Semantic Web Initiative. He was previously a Senior Research Scientist for OCLC, as well as co-founder and Associate Director of the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative. We're pleased that he's taken time out of his busy schedule to give us the scoop on the Semantic Web." You might also be interested in the Ask Susu column from 4/02 which discusses the question (one of my favourites): "Do you think Paraprofessionals or Library Assistants should work at the Reference Desk?". Food for thought. Libraries rock, in Drew Carey's view From the Beacon Journal, September 20, 2002: "Over the last two years, Carey has donated to the Ohio Library Foundation $500,000 from a Millionaire appearance, $50,000 from Hollywood Squares, another $32,000 from a second Millionaire appearance and $32,000 that he kicked in, said Murray, the foundation's leader."
