Some recent events and newly discovered resources of interest to librarians and other information professionals...
Free Resources from Dun & Bradstreet Gary Price's Virtual Acquisition Shelf & News Desk is always a fantastic source for LIS news and helpful new resources. Two FREE resources Gary recently reported on were Dun & Bradstreet's SIC Code Reference database, and a business database. The SIC Code Reference provides SIC Codes to the 8 digit level, and is searchable by either keyword or SIC code. You can also browse or download tables of 4 digit SIC codes for free. The business directory is part of a larger fee-based service, but it can be used free of charge to find company addresses, phone numbers, and sometimes even the number of employees, and annual sales figures. Great resources! Canada Reads 2002 From the site: "Is it possible to find a single book that captures the imagination of an entire country? We plan to have a good time trying. That's what Canada Reads is all about. Listen to CBC Radio during the week of April 15th when host Mary Walsh will lead five panelists on a competitive quest. Former Prime Minister Kim Campbell, actor Megan Follows, musician Steven Page of the Barenaked Ladies, and writers Leon Rooke and Nalo Hopkinson will each defend one work of Canadian fiction as the title all Canadians should read. Each day, they will vote one book off the list, until only one remains. The winning title will be unveiled on April 23rd, Canada Book Day. That will be the book Canada Reads." No More Oprah Book Club Yahoo News reported on April 5th that Oprah is putting an end to her monthly Oprah Book Club feature: "It has become harder and harder to find books on a monthly basis that I feel absolutely compelled to share," Ms. Winfrey said in a statement. "I will continue featuring books on the 'Oprah Winfrey Show' when I feel they merit my heartfelt recommendation." While the book club won't be continuing on a monthy basis, Oprah will continue to feature books on her show on occasion. French Author Claims 9/11 Pentagon Attack a Hoax CSNews.com reports: "A book claiming that the plane that crashed into the Pentagon on Sept. 11 never existed has hit best-seller lists in France despite condemnation from the U.S. military and the French media." Songfacts I discovered Songfacts at Steven Cohen's Library Stuff. From the site: "Songfacts is a searchable database of song information compiled by radio professionals, music enthusiasts, and visitors to this web site. We provide the album, year the song was released, highest U.S. and U.K. chart position, and "Songfacts" about each song. The "Songfacts" are interesting tidbits like what the song is about, who wrote it, and what makes it different. Songfacts is free." A fun and useful resource. Go To Page: 1 2
