Because these databases are very expensive and the average individual couldn't afford them, the library, by pooling the contributions of the community, purchases access to this information for all local citizens. Fourth, this same principle applies to all pay-to-use information, both on and off the Web: how many e-books, videos, or books can you, as an individual, afford? If you pool your community's money together and purchase items collectively, you've suddenly enlarged the amount of information you can access. Ultimately, all good researchers know that the Web is only one of dozens of places to look for information and most people have access to these dozens of other places for free at their local library.
