Canadian Librarianship - Part 1

© Gillian Davis

As a Canadian librarian living in the United States, I'm always trying to keep current with the happenings in Canada, particularly in the world of librarianship. But I also try to keep informed about Canada in general, so am always on the lookout for great Canadian resources on the Web to use in my reference work, or, just for my own personal interests.

Therefore this two-part article series is intended to be both 1) a guide to Canadian librarianship on the Web, and 2) a guide to Canadian research in general. I hope both aspects of these articles will be useful for the reference librarian, library school student, researcher, or anyone with an interest in Canada.

Canadian Librarianship and Libraries

Trends in Canadian Library and Information Science Education - An excellent article written by Dr. Ann Curry of SLAIS UBC, who was one of my library school instructors. Presents a discussion of the educational trends at the seven ALA accredited Canadian library schools, and points out each school's strengths and future direction. Findings are based on interviews with the directors or program chairs of the seven schools. A great way to get an overview of each of the schools, and learn about library school education in Canada in general.

National Library of Canada - The National Library's collections focus primarily on Canadiana, which is defined as "works in all subjects written by, about or of interest to Canadians, published in Canada or abroad" (About our Collections). Some of the NLC collections include Canadian newspapers, Canadian city directories, rare books, music, literary manuscripts and Canadian literature for children and for adults. Learn about exhibitions, explore the electronic collection, and spend time at the Canadian Library Gateway which provides access to Canadian libraries of all types and sizes, and their catalogues and resources. Search the NLC catalogue here. (By the way, check out this article about the NLC from LISNews.com).

Canadian Library Assocation - The assocation for Canadian librarians. A great source of information too. Find lots of resources pertaining to librarianship in Canada in the Resource Centre such as this article by Ken Haycock (Director of SLAIS UBC and current ALA Presidential candidate) and Helen Moore on trends in library service in Canada, a description of the programmes and contact information for the seven ALA Accredited Canadian library schools, the NetSafe toolkit for libraries, and much, much more.
