Librarians Making a Difference - Part 3© Gillian Davis
Feb 20, 2001
I've come across so many librarians lately doing such great work, I find myself needing to do another Librarians Making a Difference segment.
Here are four more librarians I admire:
Joe Barker
I recently attended a couple of Web searching workshops taught by Joe Barker and was immediately impressed. The first was an enlightening demonstration of searching the invisible web at CLA 2000 in San Jose, the second was a very informative hands-on Powersearching workshop held earlier this year in Cerritos. While I had heard of him and his work before, it was a pleasure to learn from Joe first-hand. Joe is a librarian at Berkeley's Teaching Library where he is the WWW Instruction Coordinator. He maintains many Web tutorials, is an expert searcher and author, and frequent presenter at conferences. If you ever have the chance to hear him speak or take a workshop taught by him, I highly recommend it. Gary Price
Gary's Web compilations (featured in my Ten Best Sites for Librarians article) are some of the best resources out there for librarians. Perhaps the most well-known among them is Price's List of Lists, where you can find lists on everything from the top Canadian employers, major U.S. sports attendance figures, top hospitals and brand name drugs, to biggest jury verdicts, unemployment rates for U.S. cities, and top all-time network telecasts. Similarly, his Direct Search compilation is a collection of thousands of Invisible Web databases that are difficult to access via traditional search tools. He also compiles the Speech & Transcript Center, Current Awareness Resources via Streaming Audio & Video, NewsCenter, Congressional Research Service Reports, and as if that wasn't enough, his new Fast Facts is a great resource for finding statistical reports and other factual information. Phew. Gary is a librarian at George Washington University and will be speaking (along with Chris Sherman) at the upcoming AIIP conference in New Orleans. Have a look at Marylaine Block's Guru Interview with Gary in the April 21, 2000 issue of Ex Libris to learn more about him.
Rory Litwin
Rory is the editor of Library Juice (also featured in Ten Best Sites for Librarians, as is LISNews.com below), a really useful current awareness tool and news source for librarians and anyone interested particularly in intellectual freedom and social responsibility. It is this intellectual freedom and social responsibility focus that sets his work apart - Library Juice is one of the few news digests for librarians and information professionals that emphasises these important aspects of our profession. For that reason, I think his work is unique and noteworthy. For more on Rory check out his personal page and Marylaine Block's interview with him in Ex Libris.
