Ten Best Sites for Librarians

of the Week are fun additions. An important source for current awareness.

Refdesk
One of the, if not the, most comprehensive reference sites on the Web. Entirely searchable, this extensive collection of links is organized into Top Headline News, Facts-at-a-Glance, Facts of the Day, Help and Advice, Current News/ Weather/ Sports/ Business, Top Reference Tools, and in-depth Subject Categories. Just a huge, detailed site that needs to be in the arsenal of any reference librarian's set of quick reference Internet tools. From Bob Drudge.

Fast Facts
Another extensive and comprehensive reference site that is great for librarians is Gary Price's Fast Facts. Because it's so long you'll need to use the Find/Ctrl+F feature to search this site. It is marvelous for statistics on virtually any subject or country. Whenever you need a factbook, almanac, or statistical report think of this site. At the bottom of the page is the added bonus of links to Gary's other fantastic Web resources, all of which are great for librarians and could be included on this list too: Direct Search (Invisible Web Resources), Price's List of Lists, Speech and Transcript Center, Current Awareness Resources via Streaming Audio & Video, NewsCenter, and Congressional Research Service WWW Accessible Reports.

I hope that you check these resources out if you haven't already, and find them as useful as I do.

Other excellent sites:

If I were including search engines I would definitely rank Google, Alta Vista, and Northern Light in the top ten. And just for general usefulness I would include Amazon for title checking, Yahoo! as a great subject guide (personally I use Yahoo! Canada daily to get Canadian news), as well as the Argus Clearinghouse. I also think very highly of Ex Libris, Librarian.net, and I better stop now before I find myself writing another entire article . . .
