Butch's Birthday

Today is Butch's birthday. He is 4 years old. It seems like yesterday when he was born. He is very special to me because he is all I have left of his mother Tara. Tara has a namesake now and I love her dearly, but Tara was special. She was a rescue and my first Lhasa.

Tara came to me by way of my vet who was treating her for the injuries her original owner inflicted on her, terrible injuries. He felt deep compassion for this little girl who was so sweet and affectionate in spite of the grievous harm this human had done to her. He knew how deeply I was feeling the loss of my beloved Lab, Beau, and he thought she was exactly what I needed. He was right on target.

He called me at home and told me that she was in his office and how badly her owner had hurt her. Even though it is not normal procedure for a vet to try to remove an animal from its home, he believed that this tiny creature would not survive long where she was.

I went to his office to meet her. He brought her to an examining room and she was shaking and terrified. She had 6 stitches in her head where the woman had struck her with a piece of wood because she had been locked in a dark closet for 73 hours and had gone potty on the floor. My heart went out to her. I spoke to her quietly and knelt on the floor. She looked at me and wagged her tail hopefully. I called her to me and she never even hesitated. She flung herself into my arms and wrapped her front legs around my neck as if she would never let go. She touched my heart as deeply as anything I have ever known. There was no doubt in my mind that she belonged with me and I with her.

My vet called her owner and asked if she would consider placing Tara in another home since she had been very outspoken about her disgust with her. The woman adamantly refused to give her away but said she would sell her. My vet relayed this information to me and I told him to get her price I would pay whatever the woman wanted. Fortunately for me, she only wanted $50.00. I left the money with my vet for her to pick up and took my baby home so that Tara would never have to see her abuser again.
