Homecoming

Kyra is home! I has lost custody of her in the divorce, but he did not take care of her so his son brought her back to me. The homecoming was poignant. Tiffany and Sunny threw themselves at her when we walked in the door. She leaped from arms to greet them. They simply could not get enough of one another. They sniffed, kissed, whimpered and touched. They curled around each other and formed a tight little ball of Lhasas. I was heartwarming to watch them. They were so happy to be together again. I knew that they missed each other but I did not realize the extent of their feelings. Kyra was frightened or upset or something. She cried in her sleep and trembled at the least little noise. Sunny, in particular, has been very protective of her. He stays by her side nearly all of the time. Every time she emits the smallest of noises, he is there, along with Tiffany, gently nuzzling her. They rub their faces on hers and touch her with their paws, constantly reassuring and comforting her. It has been a week since she came home. She is starting to be the Kyra we remember, full of love and mischief. She still has nightmares occasionally and is terrified of being left, even for a few minutes. If I have to leave her, it takes a long time to calm her when I get back, but she is better. The others are more relaxed with her now, they still watch her and rush to side if she becomes upset, but they no longer feel the need to be with her constantly. I have gotten a real education in Lhasa emotions from this. I have always maintained that Lhasa Apso's are like children and that they think and feel like children, but even I was amazed at the depth of their emotions and their dedication. Their ability to comfort and reassure each other surprised me. I did not expect them to pursue it so actively or so consistently. They had not forgotten each other at all, it had been 7 months since they had seen each other and they all acted like it had been yesterday. There was no readjustment or re-entrance to the group. They all remembered who they were and who the others were and where they each fit in. Even the location of sleeping spots on the bed were the same as before Kyra left. All three immediately rearranged themselves to the pattern they had kept before she left on the first night she was home. There were no squabbles or jockeying for position. They all immediately settled into the old pattern as if she had never been gone for so much as a single night.
