Lhasa Aspo - Fact and FictionThis is not a normal article. I have grown increasingly weary of hearing that Lhasa Apsos are snappy and ill-tempered. I do not know who started this nasty rumor, or why but I really resent it. I have been around many, many Lhasas and I have yet to come across one who is nasty or mean. Lhasa Apsos are sweet, affectionate and loving. They are eager to please and very committed to their human companions. They are not without feelings, like anything or anyone else, if they have been badly abused or mistreated, especially for a long period of time, they will learn to protect themselves as best they can. This has nothing to do with the fact that they are Lhasas, it has to do with the fact that they are not stupid. It is instinctive with any living creature to protect themselves from harm, whether it is a Lhasa Apso, a German Shepard, an elephant or a human being. Granted, Lhasa Apsos are smaller then a lot of others and more easily injured, they have to avoid more physical trauma than a larger creature might, but they are not nasty. My daughter and I operate a Lhasa Apso Rescue organization. We have dealt with many injured and abused Lhasa Apsos. Some do, initially, react with fear and defense. Any abused or injured animal can be a fear biter. I have yet to find one, even the most severely abused and neglected, that has a nasty disposition. Every single one has responded to gentleness and kindness with affection and gratitude. I am really sick of hearing Lhasa Apsos criticized and demeaned. As far as not being good with children, it is the kid not the Lhasa that is the problem. I dare any of you to have something ten times your weight and size, tromp all over you, twist your arms, legs and necks, pull your hair and ears and otherwise inflict severe bodily harm on you while you just sit there with a big grin on your face and let them traumatize you making no effort to defend or protect yourself. Lhasa Apsos are wonderful with normal children who treat them with kindness and respect, but they are not so stupid as to let some little monster dismember them without at least trying to escape the torture. My nine year old granddaughter handles every single Lhasa that comes on the place, including the six that live here. She has never been bitten by even the most frightened or injured Lhasa. This is because she treats them gently and kindly and speaks softly to them. She does not maul them and they return the respect.
