A Taste of Discomfort

Life is full of adventures, especially when you are little and young, but some of them are more fun than others! We are going through a disastrous ice storm. We have been without heat, light, water or plumbing for over a week now. Of course, since the girls don't use the facilities, they have not missed that particularly. However, the ice and snow was a new advent which did not exactly thrill them. The snow was OK, it is fun to play in and fascinating to discover, but the ice was not so much fun, it is impossible to stand up and walk in, it sticks to your nose and your fur and it is cold and won't go away.

Needless to say, this has been a mixed bag for my babies. On one hand there is something new to play with and in that is lots of fun, but on the other there is uncomfortable stuff that they can't get rid of and keeps them wet. They do not like the changes in lifestyle much either. They do not understand why it is as cold inside the house as it is outside, they do not understand why there are no lights after dark, or why Mama is cooking so funny or constantly encased in blankets.

Tempers are short and Mama gets really upset when they go to explore areas generally inaccessible because of the electric fence. There is no TV and everyone one sits huddled in front of the fireplace and doesn't want to play with them. They are not allowed to go out and romp whenever they want to and Mama goes out with them and insists they stay in a limited area, which is no fun at all.

The horses won't come out of the barn and they miss their daily visits with them. They miss being allowed to play outside whenever they want to and they miss the regular day-to-day routine that they are used to.

Through it all, they have been very good. They are learning the boundaries of acceptable exploration in the fenceless yard, they are adjusting to the cold temperatures and constantly wearing their coats and they are adapting, ergo reluctantly, to the changes in the behavior of their human companions.

They will survive this ordeal, and they will be as good as gold for Mama, but they sure will be glad when things get back to normal for them and for us!
