Autumn Adventure

AUTUMN ADVENTURE

Sometimes it seems like we take a lot of things for granted. How long has it been since you have actually stopped and noticed the change of seasons. I guess I had not really thought about it much in recent years. Winter becomes Spring and Spring becomes Summer and Summer turns into fall. It is just an accepted course of events. The different seasons had come to be marked by the change in chores. The foals in spring, weaning in summer and cold weather preparations in fall, the feeding and blankets of winter.

This year, the seasons have taken on new meaning for me. The puppies were born in the spring and had never really known anything but the summer showers and playing in the ponds to beat the summer heat. When the weather started to turn colder, I was struck by their amazed delight at the falling leaves and cool temperatures. The whole world became a new adventure for them. Autumn is a unique experience for them. The heat and green grass they had always known became cool temperatures and piles of leaves that fell from the numerous trees in the yard. They are delighted and entranced by the change in their world. The ground is covered by a carpet of colorful toys to be chased and jumped in. The oppressive heat has given way to temperatures cool enough to invite hours of uninterrupted romping.

Birds flock to the feeders and provide interesting subjects for intense observation. The squirrels no longer scamper from tree to tree to be chased but are working busily up in their nests to prepare for the coming winter.

The sleek horses have grown wooly coats that tickle noses and have taken to cavorting endlessly in the pasture, running to fast for short legs to keep up.

Flocks of ducks and geese pass noisily overhead, far out of reach, to land with a splash in the ponds previously occupied only by frogs, turtles and lily pads.

The flowers have faded and the trees have become bare silhouettes against a blustery sky. Everything is different and new and awe inspiring.

All of these events come to pass every year at this time, but I had stopped noticing them long ago, they just came and went quietly without disturbing the tedium of my life until Tiffany and Kyra's rapture captured my attention. All at once, I began to see the world in a new light, a new perspective, ground level. All of these things that had become so routine to me are new to them. They see them not only for the first time, but from a different point of view. Unlike their human companions, they have a fascination for natures presentations that far exceeds our concept.
