Lhasa FriendsLhasa Friends As I promised last week, this week I am going to introduce you to my Lhasa Apsos. They are litter mates, almost twins except Tiffany is very tiny. Kyra is the bigger of the two, but not necessarily the leader. Kyra is the more adventuresome of the two, she was the first to navigate the stairs and learn to jump onto the bed and other furniture, but she is also the most laid-back of the two. She gives in to her smaller sister without hesitation in every instance, be it food, toys or chewies. Tiffany, for all of her smaller stature, is most decidedly alpha dog. She takes what she wants without resistance from her bigger sibling, she also has the temper in the family. In some ways, however, these two do not follow pack procedures at all. Even though Tiffany is, for the most part, in charge, there are times when Kyra and their brother, Sunny, harass Tiffany unmercifully. If at all possible, Tiffany will run to me for rescue from her bigger and rougher siblings, but if rescue is not available, she will eventually tire of the teasing and lose her temper. When she does, Lhasas fly in all directions, she definitely cleans house! Along with their brother, Sunny, my daughter, who lives on our property, also has an older Lhasa, Butch, who is the son of our original Lhasa Apso, Tara, and a new baby girl, Dancr. There does not seem to be any specific pack protocol with these Lhasa Apsos. While one would assume that Butch, being the oldest and the one already in residence when the others arrived, would hold the highest position. However, he does not seem to claim any position of superiority, he immediately became a devoted nanny to the youngsters upon their arrival and has maintained a position of doting uncle ever since, not that he does not occasionally dispense a few well deserved lessons in Lhasa manners, but for the most part he simply pampers and protects all of the youngsters, confining his elder rights to breaking up fights. For the most part all of these Lhasas get along well, there are some squabbles over toys or treats, and some times one or the other gets too carried away in play resulting is a minor tiff between two or three of them, but they are usually forgotten almost before they start. The one exception seems to be a continuous feud between Kyra and Dancr with instant warfare breaking out on contact with each other, we have not yet determined what started this or how to diffuse it.
