How To Make Herbal Paper Sachets© Seshat
This month The Letter and Paper Arts brings you a guest article by author Lauri Jean Crowe of LivingHerbal.com. Learn along with me how to make herbal drawer sachets to add fragrance to your dresser drawers and linen closets. - Seshat
Many people use fabric to make sachets for their drawers and linen closets, however I like to make them from paper because in addition to scenting my own clothing and linens, they also make excellent gift toppers which can be used later. Although you can buy premade potpourri and get a similar effect, I will also give you the recipe for my favorite handmade mixture using fine herbs, small petals, powdered mixtures and oils. Basic Materials You Will Need
The first thing you want to do is work with your paper. What you are going to do is make a simple pouch which can be adhered on both ends and filled with your herbal mixture. The easiest way to do this is to fold your paper in half to make a pouch (usually you don't want the sachet to be larger than a postcard size, and you can experiment with heart shapes or circles, etc. if you're wanting to be very creative. Once your paper is folded in half, glue the pouch so that three sides are sealed, and one end is left open for stuffing. Next, you will want to place your herbs in the sachet pouch you've made from the paper. Make sure you leave breathing space for the herbs, you want the mixture to be able to breathe inside the pouch and should fill it about 65-70% full which will also allow you to seal the pouch. Once you've filled the pouch, use your adhesive to again seal the last side. You know have one stuffed herbal sachet. Now take your sharp implement and place either random puncture holes or a patterned hole series on one side of the pouch. You want enough holes so that the herbal aroma will be released, but not so many or so large that the herbal mixture leaks out of the sachet. This is when you can also take your ribbon and any additional decorative items and apply them to the sachet to finish it off. Once you've completed this step all you have to do is pop the sachet into your drawer or on a shelf with the puncture side up and your herbal sachet will slowly fragrance your garment and linen area.
