Spring Seeded Papers That Grow© Seshat
Spring planting will be happening all over the United States within the next few months as the ground warms and the climate becomes ready for growth and change. So, what can a paper artist do to help inspire the flower and vegetable gardening lovers in their life? Create spring greetings that grow.
The process is relatively simple. If you follow the directions for making paper in my article, , you just need to add one extra step. Purchase seed packets that you like or that you know the intended recipient will like. For example, if I were making the card for my daughter I would use either sunflower seeds or morning glories which are two of her favorites. Then make two sheets of thin, wet handmade paper, and sprinkle the seeds in a small sprinkle - maybe 20 to an 8.5" by 11" sheet of paper on the wet paper . Then lay the second sheet of thin, wet paper over the top pressing down gently. Let it dry and you have a quick and easy paper sheet which will grow if laid just under the soil and watered come spring planting, but which makes a lovely card to give to the gardener in your life. Here are some fun ideas to spice up the basic seeded paper: 1. Create a specific design on the paper using the seeds as a dot-to-dot. You can create a heart very simply, or spell out "mom" or other sentiment if you want to get fancy. 2. Sprinkle a variety of seeds instead of just one. For example, use a wildflower mix or a combination of sunflower seeds and morning glory seeds. 3. Use just one sheet of paper and allow the seeds to be imbedded only on one side for a rougher, more textured look. The possibilities of these seeded papers are endless, and they are functional. You will want to be sure to save the seed packets so that you can give your seeded paper recipient the instructions on how to plant. You can simply cut and paste the instructions on a gift tag, or use your creative paper artist talents to craft a hand printed or scripted design. Regardless of how you choose to present your seeded paper or who you decide to give them to, they are sure to grow on you. :)
