Originating in 1886, the Abbey Park Flower and Gala show has increased immensely in stature since it's formation. This annual event whose only disturbance were the war years, now attract thousands of visitors every year. Not bad considering in former years the park wardens were very adamant about keeping people off the grass!

Before 1925, and the kind donation by the Earl of Dysart of the Leicester Abbey Grounds, the show was limited because of it's lack of space. It consisted of the flower show, a swimming gala, which was held on the River Soar, various musical entertainment, gymnastic displays and the grand finale - the firework display.

After the Second World War amidst the revival of the park, the Abbey Park Flower and Gala show was renamed the 'City of Leicester Show.' This name remains today, although to myself and many other local residents, it still retains the name of, 'The Abbey Park Show.'

With the addition of the Abbey Grounds, the show expanded accordingly and now incorporates many different attractions to suit all ages. Perhaps my favourite as a child was the City of Leicester Horse Show. Being a horse freak anyway, the show brought the countryside to an urban area which so desperately needed it.

Initially a gymkhana for children, the horse show has developed over the years and now bears national status, attracting some of Britain's leading show jumpers. It's a part of the show that will always remain in my memory, I had never in my life seen fences OR horses so big!

From 1947 until 1970, the show also entertained a Championship Dog Show. The dog show became so successful, that many claimed that it was second in the country only to Crufts. Sadly, due to it's success, it soon outgrew the Abbey Park venue and was moved to Braunstone Park, where it is still held today.

The Abbey Park Show was heaven for a child, particularly those with a passion for animals. As a child, it is always nice to 'see,' but to 'do' is so much better! Perhaps the child's absolute favourite was the Pet's Competition. Especially geared towards children, kids could show off and display their prize pets. There were more than a few mixed breeds available I can assure you!

The attractions of the show are endless. From military displays and fairground rides to acrobatic displays and animals galore, the show has something for everyone. Even if you're not the energetic type and would prefer to sit back and relax. The high standard of entertainment is certain to capture your interest. What began as military brass bands and Catelin's Royal Pierrots has expanded to include a high standard of modern entertainment, attracting many well know artists of stage, television and radio.
