I still manage to confuse people when I mention, "It's time for tea." They assume I mean a drink of tea and of course I do, but there's more to a British tea than just a cuppa! Teatime is a whole separate meal in the UK. In America, it's usually breakfast, lunch and dinner. Well in the UK, it's breakfast, dinner and tea. And before you ask, no we don't all eat cucumber sandwiches!
Tea can consist of just about anything that's short of a full meal. A variety of sandwiches is one, usually followed by cake, or we could have a salad with meat or cheese. Pork pie is a tea favourite, or one thing that still makes my husband cringe is my passion for beans on toast!
The last Christmas I spent in Leicester, I enjoyed Christmas dinner with my Mum, Christmas tea with my sister and Boxing Day was spent somewhere else entirely. Yes it's exhausting, but it's also fun and if you enjoy being with your family, then it's certainly a wish come true. If you're ever visiting England around the holidays, be sure to stick around for Boxing Day and now you know the origins….. there's no excuse for knocking someone out!! See these :)
