Christmas In Leicester

In case you haven't noticed yet, Christmas is beckoning once more, hence all the holiday images, just to get you into the Christmas spirit! Personally, Christmas is one of my favourite times of year, although I must admit it has become harder work since attaining adulthood!

Couple that with the fact that the majority of my family and friends reside back in the UK, well, let's just say that I own a share in the post office!

Christmas in any country, town or village, is what you make it, and I try desperately to incorporate British traditions along with American ones. Thankfully, my husband's family and friends have been very gracious about this and I can honestly say, that it makes for an interesting time. Still, there is little doubt that I miss Leicestershire at Christmas, so if you'll be gracious too and allow me to talk of it, you'll ease my homesickness a great deal!

Christmas in Leicester is certainly an exciting event. For some unknown reason, the city attains a buzz, an excitement and a feeling of good will. British people can be known for their "stiff upper lipped" nature, but at this time of year, you'll actually find people willing to say "hello" as they pass you by. That doesn't sound too generous now does it? But believe me, visit at any other time of the year and you'll notice the difference!

The city centre of Leicester is full of quaint little shopping areas. If you want the malls, there's two of those as well. The outdoor market with bargains galore is the biggest outdoor market in Europe!
The market is certainly an experience alone. Stall upon stall of vendors trying to out shout each other, "2lb of apples, just 60 pence, come get yer apples!" They get louder as the day wears on and cheaper too, as they try to dispose of their goods before closing up time. You certainly have to admire their stamina, as they stand out there in all kinds of weather.

For those who prefer indoor shopping, then "The Shires" is definitely the mall for you. From discount stores to famous brand stores, McDonalds to elegant Bistro's, there is a taste of something for everybody. The fabulous Christmas decorations create a more than festive scene and Santa is on hand too to greet the little one's.

Supporting the "Haymarket Theatre" is the Haymarket shopping centre. Older than the Shire's, it is no less ideal for finding those Christmas goodies. There's usually a merry-go-round for the kids to ride and grocery stores for the important part of Christmas - food!
