Braunstone At War
Towards the end of the war, 29th June 1945 to be precise, the 53rd (Bolton) Field Regiment Royal Artillery were stationed on the park. After seeing active service in the Middle-East, including El -Alamein, the 53rd Field Regiment came to Braunstone. according to Mr. J. Pilling, " with the intention that the Regiment would take part in the invasion of Japan." The Atom-Bomb dropped on Hiroshima spared the Regiment this particular assignment. The Regiment was given the Freedom of the City on VJ Day and marched through Leicester with bayonets fixed.
