Top Five Rock Books

Through the years of being a truly idealistic rock fan, many books have given me a hint into the lives and dreams of my favorite artists. My top five, must-read books are chronicled below. Some are available at popular book stores, others are very rare indeed. Good luck finding every word written about your favorite artist. It's a great way to experience legends of rock. Enjoy!

"Billion Dollar Baby" written by Bob Greene
One of my favorite books! A first-hand account of life on the road with Alice Cooper in the 1970s. Journalist Bob Greene joined the group on tour and wrote of his days with the rebellious band. I didn't want the tour or the book to end! This is a very rare book, but can be found on the Internet and at libraries.

"Piece Of My Heart: A Portrait of Janis Joplin" written by David Dalton
From a Texas tumbleweed to a California star...this book tells the story of Janis Joplin's rise to success along with some very cool rock anecdotes.

"Walk This Way: The Autobiography of Aerosmith" written by Aerosmith with Stephan Davis
"Walk This Way" is a colorful tale about the life and times of Aerosmith. The juicy bio includes stories told by the band members and takes the reader through all their marriages, infighting, glorious tours, and recording milestones. A must read for any rock fan.

"Cherokee Mist, Jimi Hendrix: The Lost Writings" compiled by Bill Nitopi
This book includes lyrics from Hendrix - some scribbled on bits of paper and hotel room stationary - and captures the true essence of Jimi's mystical writings. "Cherokee Mist" offers a window into the guitarist's life, along with many vintage photos.

"Wonderland Avenue" written by Danny Sugerman
"Tales of Glamour and Excess" is written on the book's cover, and that really says it all. This is the tale of rock journalist Danny Sugerman, who worked for the Doors as a kid and eventually became a rock manager. He partied with rock's elite in the Hollywood Hills and survived a heroin addiction. Sugerman offers a true account peppered with desperation and a bird's eye view into the lives of rock and punk legends.
